From the Editor...

Welcome to the summer issue of the newsletter. The past few months have been very busy for our SIG, and there is a lot to report.

As you already may know, we have officially changed our name from the TOL (Teaching Older Learners) SIG to the LLL SIG (Lifelong Language Learning) SIG. Details about our change of name and focus, and changes to the SIG Constitution can be found in this issue. And don’t forget to check out the picture of our new SIG banner!

This issue of the newsletter also includes reports on the conferences in which our SIG has been involved over the past few months. Eric Skier reports on the Pan SIG Conference at which he presented a paper in May. As well, Kim Bradford-Watts writes about the CALL Conference, where she and Eric Skier presented a paper on the use of technology by older learners. Finally, Emi Itoi describes our first LLL SIG mini-conference, which was held at Temple University in Tokyo in conjunction with the Pragmatics SIG.

The feature article, Our Learning Challenge by Amanda Harlow, chronicles the author’s attempt to use a program of learner-set objectives with her Japanese older learners at an NHK Culture Center. The article details her initial difficulties in introducing the program to her learners through to its successful implementation. In addition, the second part of Tadashi Ishida’s series, An Afternoon in Ueno Park, also appears in this issue.

Finally, please look at the Upcoming Events for fall and spring. We would love to have lots of members come to these events. In particular, we hope that the forum at this year’s national conference will be a place for SIG members to share their classroom experiences or research with regard to lifelong language learning. Presenters will have their own tables, giving attendees the opportunity to circulate from presentation to presentation. This should allow everyone at the forum to relax and engage in small group discussions. Please contact Eric Skier at skier@ps.toyaku.ac.jp if you are interested in presenting.

ニューズレター夏号にようこそ。わたしたちのSIGにとってここ数ヶ月は多忙な日々でした。さてさて、こんな風に．．．。

ご存知の通り、われわれのSIGの名前がTOLからLLLに変更されました。生涯語学学習研究部会です。これからわれわれがこの新しい名前とともに目指していくもの、そして規約の変更内容を今号のニューズレターでお届けします。新しく出来上がったバーナーの写真もお楽しみ下さい。

またLLLがここ数ヶ月の間に関わってきた5月のPanSIG,、CALL大会、LLL最初のミニ研究会などの報告があります。

アマンダは、NHK文化センターで学ぶ学習者がゴールを自分自身で設定するプログラムを試み、そのプログラムが成功に至るまでの道のりを報告します。また、石田さんのシリーズ「上野公園の午後」もお楽しみ下さい。

最後に、「今後の行事予定」をお見逃しなく。今年度の大会のLLLフォーラムは、教室での経験や研究についてみなさんと意見交換する場として活用してください。発表者それぞれにテーブルがあてがわれますので、フォーラム参加者は、興味ある発表者のテーブルにつき、小さなディスカッション･グループを作ります。そうすることで、少ない人数でリラックスした雰囲気の中、議論を深めることを目指しています。

TOLがLLLに名称変更したことにより、このニューズレターの名前を変更することを検討中です。みなさんからの素敵な名前の案を募集中です。ジュリアまでどしどしご意見をお寄せ下さい。
