A change of name: TOL SIG becomes the LLL SIG

The idea that we change our name was first discussed by a group of members at the national conference in Kitakyushu in November 2006. In early spring, there was an online discussion about the issue on the members’ email list followed by a vote in which the name change was unanimously accepted by the participants. In June, having received approval at the JALT Executive Board meeting, the Teaching Older Learners Special Interest Group (TOL SIG) officially changed its name to the Lifelong Language Learning Special Interest Group (LLL SIG).

The SIG has not only changed its name but also broadened its focus to include adult language learners of all ages. We hope that those teaching young adult or middle-aged learners as well as those teaching older adults will join together to discuss adult teaching and learning issues at various stages of life.

Several articles from the revised “Constitution of the Lifelong Language Learning SIG of the Japan Association for Language Teaching” have been reprinted below to provide members with a clear understanding of the SIG’s reason for being and purpose.

The name of the organization is "Shogai Gogaku Gakushu Kenkyubukai" in Japanese and "The Lifelong Language Learning Special Interest Group" in English and its abbreviation is LLL SIG.

The Lifelong Language Learning SIG is an affiliate of JALT (The Japan Association for Language Teaching).

Raison D'etre

The term lifelong learning, although meaning learning throughout life, is adopted by the SIG as a term to mean post-compulsory education. In Japan, a growing number of young, middle-aged, and older adults are eager to study a second language as an element of their lifelong learning paths. This trend reflects the understanding that the learning of other languages helps lead to an enriched quality of life as students learn more about the world around them. It also reflects the aging population of Japan as it is now widely accepted that engagement in learning is known to prolong an active and healthy life. Therefore, a national organization is needed to provide resources and information for those teaching languages to adult learners of all ages. JALT, as a national organization of teachers, provides the umbrella under which the Lifelong Language Learning SIG may grow and flourish.

Purpose

The Lifelong Language Learning SIG is a non-profit organization whose purposes are to foster research, hold forums, issue publications, cooperate with related SIGs, and engage in other activities for those interested in improving the quality of language teaching to adult learners of all ages.

名称変更：　TOL SIGからLLL　SIGへ

名称変更については、2006年の11月に開催された北九州での全国大会ですでに何人かの会員間で話題になっていた。今春、オンラインで名称変更について議論が重ねられ、最終的には投票により満場一致で名称変更が承認された。6月に、JALT EBM会議で承認され、TOLは正式にLLLと名称変更されることになった。

実際は、名称変更だけに留まらず、LLLはその研究対象を広げ、幅広い大人の学習者を対象とすることにした。青年、中年、そして高齢者に語学を教えている会員がさまざまな人生のステージにおける語学教育に関する問題を一緒に考えて、話し合えるように願っている。

名称変更に関わる理解を深めるため、定款の変更点などを以下に示した。

第１章 総 則
(名称）

第１条 この法人の名称は、日本語名で、生涯語学学習研究部会という。英語名 では、The Lifelong Language Learning Special Interest Groupといい、略称をLLL SIGとする。

第2条　

生涯語学学習研究部会は全国語学教育学会に所属する団体である。

(存在理由)

生涯を通じて学ぶと言う意味の生涯学習という用語は、成人教育を意味する用語として本部会で採用されている。生涯学習の道のりの要件の一つとして、第二言語を熱心に勉強しようとする成人が日本ではますます増えている。生徒が自分をとりまく世界についてより多く学ぶので、この傾向は、他の言語を学習することが生活の質を豊かにするのに役立つという見方を反映している。学習に取り組むことは、活動的で健康な人生を延長するという認識が、今や大いに受け入れられているので、それはまた日本の高齢化社会を反映している。成人に言語を教えている人々のための知識や情報の供給源として、全国的な団体が必要とされている。教師の全国的な団体である全国語学教育学会の傘下で、生涯語学学習研究部会は発展し、繁栄するだろう。

(目的）

生涯語学学習研究部会は、成人学習者を対象とした語学教育の質を向上させることに関心を持つ者に対して、研究の促進、フォーラムの開催、出版物の発行、関連研究部会との協力およびその他の事業を行うことを目的とする非営利団体である。
