"Authentic English and Elderly Learners: A Day of Sharing Theory and Practice"

先日、LLLにとっては記念すべき研究会がテンプル大学で開催されました。この研究会は、TOLが新しい役員を迎えLLLとして生まれ変わり、大きな一歩を踏み出したという大きな意味があったのです。
発表内容は、理論から実践まで幅広くバラエティーに富み、長い一日があっと言う間に過ぎ去りました。私が一番うれしく思ったのは、参加者同士が打ち解け、友好的な雰囲気を感じる会になったことです。どの発表でもフロアーからの活発な意見や質問が飛び出し、ユーモア溢れるやり取りや学問的に高品質なやり取りが交わされました。
実は今回私の教える学生が2名参加しました。彼女たちにとっては、「学会」に参加すること自体が初めてでしたし、それも全て英語でしたので2重の驚きだったようでした。彼女たちの英語の力が及ばず内容はあまり分からなかったようですが、メインスピーカーのケリー先生のファンになってしまったそうです。（モデルを書くように指示され、誤解した彼女たちは似顔絵を描いていたそうです。）
若い人から高齢者まで幅広い層が参加できる研究会をこれからもLLLは目指すことが大切です。大成功に終わった今回の研究会をバネにLLLが大きく飛躍していくことを確信しました。
最後になりましたが、今回の開催には多くの人たちの協力を得ました。テンプル大学の関係者（特にwelcome speechを引き受けてくださったChilds先生）、プラグマティックSIG、東京チャプター、西東京チャプターの役員の方々、ケリー先生他発表者の方々、そしてLLLの役員のみなさん、どうもありがとうございました。そしてお疲れ様でした。

Our first mini-conference (a joint Lifelong Language Learning / Pragmatics SIG Mini-Conference) was held at Temple University, Tokyo, on June 24th. This conference marked the official unveiling of our new name, Lifelong Language Learning SIG, and was, we hope, the first of many events to be sponsored by our SIG.
Each of the conference presentations was unique and interesting, with topics ranging from the theoretical to the practical. What I liked the most was the friendly atmosphere of the conference. After each presentation, there was an active Q & A session and the questions and comments were numerous, often humorous and sometimes very academic. With so much going on, the day flew past before we knew it.
Two of my seminar students attended the conference. It was the first time they had attended such an academic meeting. Although they were somewhat uneasy in the English environment of the gathering and could not always follow the content of the presentations, they became big fans of our main guest speaker, Curtis Kelly.
Participants, both the attendees and presenters, ranged from university students to veteran teachers and I think that when planning future events we should also aim to attract a mix of people of various ages.
Last but not least, my thanks to a lot of people who volunteered to help with the conference: our main guest speaker, Curtis Kelly, who came all the way from Osaka; Professor Childs of Temple for his opening remarks; officers of the Pragmatic SIG, Tokyo chapter, West Tokyo chapter; and LLL staff members.
