Challenges in Studying Abroad

English language learners can reap valuable benefits from studying abroad. It is a completely different experience from studying in one's own country, where it is possible to learn the basics of the language but not to experience life in an English-speaking country. The more chances one has to experience life abroad, the more one can learn. I am reminded of this every year when I take my Japanese university students to the University of California in Davis, California.

What can be learned from studying abroad? First of all, non-native speakers are often astonished by the speed at which people speak. They never speak slowly as English teachers do in Japan. Furthermore, it is often necessary to understand exactly what is said in order to accomplish a task, such as following directions, making it vital to learn how to check and confirm information.

Next, it is important to comprehend the written word accurately. This ability has become even more crucial in recent years due to the increase in the use of machines and computers in our daily lives. For example, when withdrawing money, it is essential to understand the English directions appearing on the automated teller machine screen. When riding the bus, passengers must be able to locate the bus stop and understand signs showing the routes and fares. It seems to me that, in many countries, bus signs are hard to read because of the small script and their placement high above the heads of the passengers, which is in contrast to eye-level signs in Japan. I advise my students to tell the bus driver their destination and then to stand toward the front of the bus. Despite this advice, distraught students often telephone around seven or eight o'clock in the evening because they are lost.

Third, it is advisable for learners to stay with a host family, especially those who have never before been abroad. By living with a family, they can learn more about customs and food, as well as related language, and they might get a better value for their money.

Some of my students get homesick abroad because they expect routines and meals to be similar to those in their own countries. They have to struggle with a different culture and language, and find this to be utterly unexpected and shocking. This may be due to a lack of life experience, and is yet another reason that studying abroad may be worthwhile.

When my students first go abroad, they are often surprised to find that they cannot communicate well. However, they very quickly pick up the skills they need to get along in their new environment and eventually manage to communicate without any assistance from their teachers. They learn practical English and gain confidence. It is not only university students who benefit from study abroad. Recently, learners of all ages have been applying for study and home stay programs. Learners young and not so young, the world awaits!

外国での経験により学ぶ事は年齢制限なし

若い英語の学習者のみでなく中高年の学習者も、外国での経験で貴重な何かを学べる。自国での学習とは全く異なる。自分自身の国で基礎的なことは学べるが、何か大事なものが欠けている。何歳であろうと、英語を上達したければチャレンジすることは素晴らしい。多く滞在すればするほど、より多く学べる。毎年学生をカリフォルニアのUCデイヴィス校に連れて行くたびに、このことが大切だと感じる。

この経験より学ぶことは多々ある。まず、地元の人々の話すスピードに驚く。
日本にいる英語の先生のようにゆっくりと話してはくれない。大きく異なるのは、人々の話を正確に聞き取らねばならない点である。そうでないと、例えば、きちんと目的地に着かなくてはならない場合など、事を済ませることが出来ないからだ。だから他の人々の言うことを、理解できるまで何回でも確認することが大切なのだ。

次に、書かれていることを正確に読み取らねばならない。例えば、お金を引き出す時、ATMは全て英語で書かれているが、それを理解しなければならない。それは生活上必須であり、カードをよく使う私達の生活においてはなおさらである。バスに乗るなら、バス停を見つけ標識をよく読まないといけない。日本では簡単なことだが、バス停の標識が日本のそれに比べポールのもっと上の方にあるので、見つけるのが難しい。しかも小さな字で書かれているのだ。学生には、運転手に行き先を告げすぐ後ろに立っているように指導する。学生が正しいバス停で降りそこなうと教師にとって大変な事態になる。学生たちはよく夜の7時から8時頃に道に迷ったと教師に電話をかけてきて、自分の家まで教師に送ってもらうことになる。

第三に、成人の学習者、特にまだ経験のない人にはホームステイがお勧めである。中高年であれば、おそらくより多く学べるからだ。ある意味自分のお金を投資したので無駄使いはしたくないと感じるだろう。新しい習慣や料理、それに伴う言語も学べる。しかし、学生の中には自国と同様の日課や食事を期待し、ホームシックになる人もいる。全く新しい物事に取り組まなければならないし、それを英語のみで切り抜けなければならない。これは彼らにとって想像以上にショッキングなことのようだ。言語のスキルもさることながら、それまでの人生経験も重要となってくるからかもしれない。このような訳で、社会人になってから外国で学ぶ方が容易であるだろうし、やってみる価値のあることだろう。

最後に、滞在後の効果について述べたい。学生たちは海外で学習することで、確かに学ぶ意欲が湧く。最初に語彙と英語の力のなさにショックを受けるが、最後には教師の助けなしに何とか意志の疎通を図れるようになる。外国での経験により実践的な英語を学ぶのだ。それは全ての年齢層の学習者に言えることである。
