An afternoon in Ueno Park (Part 7)
Tadashi Ishida
This is the seventh in a series of articles in which Tadashi Ishida, an English teacher at a community center in Taito Ward in Tokyo, describes a language-learning activity that he conducted with his class. After considerable research and preparation, the learners toured Ueno Park with a foreign visitor, Mrs. Fitzwater, explaining to her the highlights of the park and answering her questions. After the tour, the learners wrote their own combination text and guidebook based on this experience.
Mr.Tomatsu, one of the learners, is quite familiar with art. He discussed the National Western Art Museum with Mrs. Fitzwater.
Tomatsu: This is the National Western Art Museum. It was established in 1959.
Fitzwater: Does this museum have any special collections?
Tomatsu: The collection in this museum is called the "Matsukata Collection" because
it was originally owned by the late Matsukata Kojiro.
Fitzwater: Please tell me about him.
Tomatsu: Mr. Matsukata was a very rich man. He went to Europe after the First World War and bought a great deal of art and sculpture. After the Second World War, his collection of art and sculpture was opened to the public. Now, about 400 pieces of art are shown to the public in this museum.
Fitzwater: I see. What kind of works feature in his collection?
Tomatsu: The main part of the collection is the impressionist works of Cezanne,
Degas, Monet and Renoir. Many Japanese people seem to like impressionist
painting. In addition, there is one of the most famous sculptures by Rodin,
"The Thinker".
Fitzwater: You seem to know much about art. Are you a student of art?
Tomatsu: Yes, I used to be. I studied oil painting in senior high school.
Fitzwater: Very good. What kind of things do you paint?
Tomatsu: I paint pictures of athletes and my family.
