Hello, welcome to the May 31st, 2021 edition of JALT Talk, the monthly announcements newsletter of the Japan Association for Language Teaching. If you've received this from a colleague and you'd like to subscribe, please see our JALT Talk page, https://jalt.org/main/jalttalk . However, if you're a subscriber who would like to unsubscribe, you can do so here: https://hosted.jalt.org/membermail/unsubscribe-success.php?c=67 (but we'll be sad to see you go).

We have a lot of information this time around. I would like to make sure you notice that our montly ZPD (Zoom for Professional Development) session will be held on a Wednesday this month; instead of the final Sunday, it will be on the final day of the month. We hope this helps everyone who told us that Sunday was really difficult for them. If you haven't heard of this before, the JALT ZPD is basically an online discussion. We use Zoom, so we can create smaller online rooms for many topics, and the participants can choose which topic they want to participate in. Our regular topics include new membership orientation, getting published, discussing research, online teaching, and more. JALT officers can ask questions related to the new JALT website as well as position-specific questions. See http://bit.ly/ZPDRSVP to sign up. You'll receive an email reminder on the day of the session.

Teacher Development SIG: Teacher Journeys 2021 call for proposals

Following the model of Teacher Journeys 2020, the TD SIG will again curate a collection of videos sharing reflections on teaching in these new circumstances. We invite teachers to submit a proposal for a pre-recorded video presentation, 5 to 20 minutes in length, sharing their experience of teaching in these circumstances. We encourage presenters to focus on teaching during the pandemic, but welcome proposals on other features of teaching practice. Proposals will be accepted through Saturday, August 15. Presentations will be posted on the conference site and YouTube in the fall. Further information can be found here: https://sites.google.com/view/teacherjourneys2021/home

JALT Research Grant Proposal Deadline: September 30th

Each year, JALT awards up to three grants for a maximum of 100,000 yen each for research on language teaching in Japan. Only JALT members who have no outside funding sources to conduct research are eligible to apply. The goal of the grants is to support language teachers in their professional development and to encourage teachers to engage in classroom-based research. Grant applications are collected each summer and vetted by the JALT Research Grants Committee. Winners of the grants receive funding before the start of the following school year, during which they conduct their studies, provide quarterly reports, and receive guidance from the committee. After completing the research, winners are invited to give presentations on their projects at the JALT national conference and publish a paper in the Language Teacher. The deadline for proposals for projects starting in the 2022 school year is September 30th, 2021.
Details and application can be found on the JALT Research Grants website: https://jalt.org/researchgrants

Seven JALT Members Won TESOL Memberships

JALT is pleased to announce the seven JALT members who have won the one-year TESOL International Association complimentary memberships:

We received just over 50 entries into the drawing and the seven winners were drawn via a randomizer application. All winners demonstrated that they are active JALT members. In addition, JALT confirmed that they are current members, and TESOL will now confirm that they have not been TESOL members during the past 5 years, both requirements stipulated by TESOL.
Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone who took the time to apply.

The drawing will take place again next year!

PanSIG 2021 Report and Call for 2023 Chairs

PanSIG 2021 was an incredible event and huge thanks to all that came, I'm sure it was worth your while. And hats off to the exceptional planning committee, especially the Conference Chair Gabriela and site Chair Adie, for such a smooth day. The team was well directed and supported each other like a true team should.

Planning for PanSIG 2022 is underway already, with full support from the 2021 exec. Already it looks like it will be yet another first-class conference.

We are looking ahead to 2023 from now too and starting the call for two roles to be filled: a Conference Chair, and a Venue Chair.
If either of these rewarding roles appeals to you, please register your interest.
