Fee (One-Day members): free
Prefecture: Miyazaki
City: Miyazaki
Venue: Miyazaki Municipal University Rm. #310
Description: Many people think of classroom tests in merely as a measure of student performance, something to be done in order to satisfy the administrators' demands to assign grades to students. But in fact tests can and should serve a wider educational function. Tests can and should become part of the learning and teaching process, not merely the end result of it. In this seminar, Mike Guest will outline some general theories and practicalities regarding testing. He will then go on to explain and demonstrate practical ways in which testing can stimulate and inspire students as well as contribute to greater language competence. Participants will evaluate and discuss test samples provided as well as making creative and productive samples of their own.

Description: Technology has always made big promises. But the promises come true only when the technology respects its consumers and the values of society. For English language education, we take a moment to look at the decade past and the decade to come. We find that change is only beginning, but that change will be useful only if the goals of education and the limits of the media are respected. What is the best use of computers in education? How can the technology and traditional educational values both support each other? We will consider some large questions and some practical details.
