Can't Get No Satisfaction?: Role Perception among Native Speaker Tertiary EFL Educators

Speaker: Dr. Paul Hullah
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM (Sat., May 20th, 2006)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): free
Prefecture: Miyazaki
City: Miyazaki
Venue: Miyazaki Municipal University Rm. #310
Description: Dr. Hullah will report on a 1997 survey of native-speaker EFL teachers at Japanese universities. The questionnaire explored teacher job satisfaction, and how these EFL teachers perceived their role in their respective institutions. The presenter-led discussion will consider such issues as: What activities actually/ideally comprise your job? Are your skills appropriately used in your position? Does your position meet preconceptions you had of it? How much job satisfaction do you feel? Though specifically addressing tertiary education, this presentation will interest anyone working in EFL in Japan.

Portfolio Use in Language Classrooms

Speaker: Matthew Apple & Etsuko Shimo
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM (Sat., September 30th, 2006)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): free
Prefecture: Miyazaki
City: Miyazaki
Venue: Miyazaki Municipal University, Kenkyu Kogi Toh 3F, Room 310, Funatsuka 1-1-2, Miyazaki-shi (Tel: 0985-20-2000)
Description: In this workshop, the presenters will first discuss types and uses of portfolios in second language classrooms.

Previous research indicates several benefits: students can monitor and reflect on their own learning processes and

progress; they can feel more sense of achievement compared with traditional tests; and they can receive more feedback

both from their instructor and classmates by sharing each other's work in progress.

Presenters will share samples of teacher's instructions, students' portfolios, and student reactions about portfolio

creation from reading, writing, and speaking and listening classes, as well as discuss assessment procedures and

portfolio sharing activities. Participants will have a chance to consider how they can apply portfolio use and

assessment to their teaching contexts.
