A Psychodynamic Approach to Enhancing Perceived Value in the Language

Speaker: Paul Doyon and Brad Deacon
Time: 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM (Sun., January 20th, 2002)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000 yen
Prefecture: Shizuoka
City: Shizuoka
Venue: Shizuoka Kyoiku Kaikan (next to Mr. Donuts, across from Shin-Shizuoka station)
Description: In this presentation, we will address a two-pronged approach -- cognitive and affective -- to shifting students' beliefs, and hence their perceptions in the language classroom. While there has been much research regarding communicative competencies, we believe that prerequisite to communicative competency is a psychodynamic competency. Students beliefs about themselves as learners, about language learning, and about learning in general, will affect how they perceive our classrooms. By using anecdotes from our own lives and classrooms, we will introduce the concept of value perception enhancement and how to turn apathy into reciprocity through the use of mediating cognitive and affective strategies.

Description: The motivation and creative spark provided by hearing and attempting to retell folk and fairy tales make them a wonderful resource for exploring language and culture. This presentation will suggest activities that use traditional, revised, and unconventional folk and fairy tales in different media to develop language skills through storytelling, and raise a more critical awareness of some of the cultural assumptions embedded in these narratives.
