Using Learning Theories to Motivate Students

Description: Gregory O'Dowd examines issues related to why teachers need to understand and use learning theories in the classroom. To facilitate an understanding of the issues involved, some basic matters concerning the theory of learning, learning styles, learning strategies and multiple intelligences theory will be outlined. Research finding from some action research studies will also be presented.

In the second half of the presentation, we will examine ways that students can conduct Internet projects without needing to set foot in a computer room.

Description: This paper explains how the Flesh reading ease scores can be used to gauge, monitor and help improve writing skills of English college students. Over the past ten years, reading ease scores have been introduced in various programs such as grammar check and reading fluency calculations in Microsoft Word. This paper will discuss positive aspects of incorporating Flesh reading ease scores and writing level evaluations as a tool for monitoring and helping students bring their papers up to a minimal standard.

Therefore, teachers should have a plethora of ideas in case lessons finish sooner than expected, or for whenever a quick change is needed. The variety of fun English activities in this workshop will show teachers new ways to energize their classes as well as release tension and ease anxiety. These no-prep and low-prep activities can easily be adapted to suit different classrooms and levels.

Description: The use of a computer camera combined with chat software allows students to interact economically with visitors over the Internet. In this session, the JALT chapters of Nagoya and Toyohashi will link together in an exciting practical demonstration of the possibilities of this technology. After the technology is explained, participants of both chapters will engage together in "My Share Live". Presenters and participants will use computer cameras to share one of their own teaching ideas with participants in the other chapter.
