An Integrated Oral Communication Program

Description: The presenter will introduce the Oral Communication Program in use at Nanzan Junior College, and will describe how the activities were developed, as well as showing videos of two of them in action. He will also introduce the most important component of the program: the three inter-class activities which provide students with a clear focus for their studies, and which are used for assessment purposes. The approach will be practical, though of course there are theoretical considerations involved.

Tools of the Trade: Utilizing the Video-iPod to Deliver Engaging EFL Content

Description: Using only a video iPod, the presenter will demonstrate numerous ways that this new tool can be utilized to deliver both authentic and teacher-created material to the EFL classroom. The video iPod can be used either as a basic stimulus/ schema activator, supplemental support, or as the main content of a language lesson. Learn how to use video, slides (which are more commonly associated with laptops and PowerPoint), photos and audio, including podcasts, the latest online trend, to better engage students. Technological tips, along with a detailed handout that includes web-based supplementary materials, will be provided. Come and experience why the iPod is actually an affordable alternative to other technologies such as laptop computers.

Teaching English with C.A.R.E.!

Description: The presenter will discuss the core principles he feels are essential for the effective teaching of English to children in Japan. These principles are distilled from extensive experience teaching children and from working with dynamic and creative mentors, in particular Tamiko Yamaoka. His four principles are captured in the anagram, C.A.R.E.

"C" stands for "Change": Activities should be short and there should be great variety.

"A" stands for "Action": physical movement should be worked into many or most activities.

"R" stands for "Rewards": there should be both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards for the students.

"E" stands for "English Only": all teacher talk, and as much student talk as possible, should be in English.

Though these principles are not exhaustive, they cover many if not most of the bases. The presenter will first explain these four principles, demonstrating them with practical examples and group participation, then provide time for questions and discussion.

Questions as a Precursor to Communication.

Description: Asking questions leads to better communication, and the unfamiliarity of Japanese students with asking questions often interferes with the natural flow of conversation. As a result, students may lack information necessary to conduct a conversation or worse, be left out of the communication loop altogether. Instead of asking only yes/no questions, students should be encouraged to ask questions which require more elaborate answers and prompt follow-up questions. The presenter will illustrate how to give students practice asking and answering questions in English. By developing these skills, students will be encouraged to use questions as a source of gaining and sharing information. This workshop will introduce questions that teachers can integrate into classroom practices.

Participants will experience and discuss a variety of EFL lessons designed around videos on international themes. What Is Oral Interpretation? What Can It Do?

Description: It would definitely be wrong to delude learners into thinking that they already know enough English and that their only problem is shyness, so as to (on the pretext of so-called communicative activities) engage them in mere chit-chat using their meager stock of chunky conversational phrases. Oral Interpretation, though it is originally "the art of communicating to an audience a piece of written work in its intellectual, emotional, and esthetic entirety" (Charlotte Lee), is actually a powerful means of language input. It enhances the learner's sensitivity toward a silent text through an analysis not only of its meaning, but more importantly of its voice and intentions. As the essential rhetoric of language is absorbed in a holistic way, it will become evident in the learner's spontaneous spoken and written utterances.

Vygotsky in the Classroom

Description: In this workshop, some practical applications of sociocultural theory for the classroom will be introduced and practiced. Ways of incorporating the theoretical principles of the Zone of Proximal Development, the social origins of cognition, and the notion of self-regulation into ordinary language lessons will be explored. Although the focus of the workshop will be on teaching older students, there should be something adaptable for all proficiency and age levels, and part of the presentation time will involve discussion on adapting and incorporating theory into practice. The workshop will be followed by our annual Bonenkai. Everyone is welcome.
