Description: Today is a sneak preview of four presentations that will be given at the National JALT Conference, Nov. 19-22 in Nara. First, Mark Zeid of Hiroshima College of Foreign Languages will lead workshops on two topics: 1) Writing Effective Resumes for Japan, and 2) Making Classes More Interactive. Next, Gordon Luster (who is an entrepreneur) will describe a web site that he and colleagues have been developing which is designed to help Japanese adult EFL students get more exposure to English at levels they can readily understand. Finally, Ian Nakamura of Okayama University will give a talk entitled Enhancing Communication Through Social Interaction. Members of the audience will have plenty of time to ask questions.

Beyond "Political Correctness" in Language Assessment: A View from an Outsider

Description: For many decades, English language tests have conformed to such long-standing principles as practicality, reliability, and construct validity, all of which are sound, "politically correct" foundations. However, such testing practices often lack the authenticity, the washback, and content validity present in more performance-based, biased-for-best, formative, and collaborative evaluation of language abilities. The presenter will offer some practical examples of transforming traditional tests into what may perhaps be politically incorrect, but nevertheless authentic assessments.
