Teaching the strategies of speaking

Description: This workshop will discuss the whys and hows of teaching communication strategies. Although communicative competence consists of grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence and strategic competence, communication strategies are often neglected and left to develop as a felicitous by-product of overall language proficiency. Strategies training is needed in language education.

Description: This workshop examines the difficulties Japanese students face as they attempt to make presentations in English. The aim is to equip teachers with knowledge and tools to better assist their students. Though the textbook "Dynamic Presentations" is offered as one model, session particpants will collaborate to solve context-specific problems.

1. Building your own interactive whiteboard: methods and applications 2. Extensive reading with low level learners

Description: 1. The interactive whiteboard may soon be a feature of all language classrooms. With a little ingenuity and 6000 yen, teachers can introduce the technology into any space with a projector or television. The process is uncomplicated but the results are spectacular. Participants will have the opportunity to try it and discuss applications.

2. Extensive reading can increase motivation and confidence as well as vocabulary and reading fluency. Even very weak students can benefit from a new series of graded readers. Setting up and managing a class library will be demonstrated.

In this lively discussion, we'll use Thich Nhat Han's Mindfulness Trainings as inspiration to consider L2 writing instruction and assessment, correcting student writing, and our identities as instructors.
